How to start running....Take 1 step at a time

After a long absence, consisting of my final year of graduate school and lots of work, we are finally back up and running.

In little over a month, the annual Run For Dad charity race will take place. For those that have not followed For My Father, this will be the third year that we have participated. Each consecutive year we participate, we double our donations to the American Cancer Society. Last year we raised $500 dollars and to keep with tradition, we are trying to raise $1,000 this year. We are starting the process of finding runners and sponsors earlier this year for that reason.

If you are interested in either the race or walk that take place that day, please email jointeam @ formyfather.org. I will be posting links with a complete packet of information for the race along with the race application.

Don't Forget

Just a few reminders

If you have not already told me you are going to run on sunday please email me at jointeam at formyfather.org with the name you would like on the front of your shirt. We will be making the shirts thursday night and need an accurate count of participants. We are also still looking for additional people to come out on Sunday, so invite your friends and family. If you would like to show your support but can not walk or run the race, we are making support shirts at a cost of $5 per shirt. If you would like a support shirt I need to know by thursday. The entry fee and race form are due to me by Saturday because I will be going to the race early on sunday to register all For My Father participants. Lastly, we are receiving a great number of donations, but please make a final push these last few days before the race.

Keep up the good work

Just a few days left

So just a few more days till the biggest event in charity history. If you are going to be running/walking on sunday dont forget that I need your $22 fee and entry form by Friday unless you have made arrangements with me. If you have not started collecting donations dont worry, I won't need them until sunday. I will be contacting everyone on Saturday to get an estimate on the amount of donations we have collected so I may figure out ACS's portion.

If you have not signed up and are still interested, contact me as soon as possible at jointeam (@) formyfather.org . We currently have between 25-30 people signed up for the race, more than I had ever hoped for.

I will have a definite location for the car pool meeting place by friday morning. We probably will meet in the parking lot of the Deptford Mall, which is only a few minutes from the NJ turnpike entrance. Just a reminder the car pool will leave at 7am.

I will be making the shirts late thursday night and you can either pick them up from me after thursday or at the race on Sunday.

Father's Day Run!!!!!!

Sunday, June 17th Father's Day

On Father's Day , the biggest event in our charity's history will take place. The American Cancer Society(ACS) is holding a 5k Father's Day run named Run for Dad at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, Nj. The race starts promptly at 9 am but I am asking all For My Father Team members and supporters to report at 8am for race number pickup and pictures. The cost of the race is $17 per person plus $5 if you do not have a For My Father team shirt. Supporters are asked to pay $5 for a supporters' shirt. Over the weekend I will be putting together information packets that will contain: an Entry form, New Sponsorship Form, Race Details, Directions, and a Donation envelope. You can pick these up from me or from the person who has recruited you for the race. I will need the entry form and fees by June, 15th so that I may get everything in order for the race.

As of right now, there will be between 20-30 team members running/walking the 5k race. We are going to donate 25% of all offline donations to the American Cancer Society. I am asking team members and supporters to bring a picture of a loved one who was taken by cancer or someone who is battling it now. These people are our inspiration for running, we will honor them at the race.

To everyone who has started collecting donations please accept cash or have them make checks out to Andrew Hayward.

During the award ceremony, I will be presenting someone from ACS a blown up check representing our donation to ACS.

These couple of weeks before the race, this website will be slightly updated to better inform our growing public.

Lastly, to those who use myspace, I ask that you add www.myspace.com/formyfather as a friend and from now till Father's Day you make it your number 1 Friend

More information coming soon..............

Calling all runners.......

So after a short little break .... For My Father is finally gearing up for its next race. We are looking to run a 5k on March 25 in Cape May. The race's website is www.odmarathon.org, they are also hosting a marathon, ten miler, and kids 1.5 mile run. The registration fee is $20 for the 5k and you can register online. I will be posting more informatin as it comes available. If you are interested in running this race for our team. Please attach a comment to this post.

Site update

I may start using a service called typekey to eliminate some of the junk comments I have been getting on the site. I have received about 2,000 junk comments in the last 3 months and typekey is a free registering company that will eliminate most of them. All you have to do is sign up for free and you will be able to post comments on my site and many other sites without any problems.

Let the donations roll in........

So before this site was built I had decided that I was going to run two marathons, 26.2 miles each, and raise $1, 000 for each mile. I might run more than two marathons but I kept the fundraising goal at $52, 400. By donating, you support Team Formyfather in their races, you honor the memory of loved ones lost to cancer, and you also fund one of the countries leading cancer research facilities. The donation page accepts Visa and Mastercard and other ways to donate will be made available shortly.

Donations will go to....................

After a few long weeks searching for the perfect cancer cause to donate to, a decision has finally been made. The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is one of the countries top facilities and their main mission is to eliminate cancer as a cause of human suffering and death. The deciding factor, when compared with another top rated facility, was the fact that this center does not have a "run" associated with it. I look forward to working with the people at Fhcr and making this Formyfather charity compaign a success.
The online donation page is being built as we speak and will be available by Wed at the latest.

25 in 2

So yesterday due to some rain issues I decided to do a little crosstraining to pass the time. A little crosstraining will help prepare me to lift weights in a week or two. Today I went out to run the usual 3.6 miles and the sky was still very cloudy. It was beautiful. I could see the sun breaking through around mile 2 and by the end of the run I was running towards blue skies.

I started the run today a little fast because I am trying to speed up my pace little by little. The first mile I was running 6:15 then went down to around 7 for mile 2. By mile 3 I was running around an 8 until the last section where I sped up once again. All in all my average pace was 7:15, the pace I need to qualify for boston. I also ran 1 minute slower than my fastest time on the course. :)

25 in 2

So on Wed I received my first order of charity wrist bands. I ordered 25 not knowing how fast I would be able to sell them. By Thursday night I had sold all 25. I sold 25 bands in 2 days. It was great to see everyone at work support this project by wearing the bands. I really enjoyed telling the story of my father to each buyer. Each person had their own story to tell about how cancer has affected their life , through friend or family member. Some people have even shown interest in doing races or doing pr work for the organization and I love it. Everything is starting to fit right into place. Now lets see how long it takes me to sell 50.......

Besides training, I spend a lot of time getting the word out about For My Father. Between talking to people and exploring ways to maximize pr, I keep myself pretty busy. Thursday night something happened that made me excited, even though it really wasn't a big deal. I have been testing some search engines just to see if the site shows up. I tried Google last night and For My Father finally showed up. The easier the site is to find, the more people I can get involved.

Enough for this entry, time for some more pr.
