Father's Day Run!!!!!!

Sunday, June 17th Father's Day

On Father's Day , the biggest event in our charity's history will take place. The American Cancer Society(ACS) is holding a 5k Father's Day run named Run for Dad at Mercer County Park in West Windsor, Nj. The race starts promptly at 9 am but I am asking all For My Father Team members and supporters to report at 8am for race number pickup and pictures. The cost of the race is $17 per person plus $5 if you do not have a For My Father team shirt. Supporters are asked to pay $5 for a supporters' shirt. Over the weekend I will be putting together information packets that will contain: an Entry form, New Sponsorship Form, Race Details, Directions, and a Donation envelope. You can pick these up from me or from the person who has recruited you for the race. I will need the entry form and fees by June, 15th so that I may get everything in order for the race.

As of right now, there will be between 20-30 team members running/walking the 5k race. We are going to donate 25% of all offline donations to the American Cancer Society. I am asking team members and supporters to bring a picture of a loved one who was taken by cancer or someone who is battling it now. These people are our inspiration for running, we will honor them at the race.

To everyone who has started collecting donations please accept cash or have them make checks out to Andrew Hayward.

During the award ceremony, I will be presenting someone from ACS a blown up check representing our donation to ACS.

These couple of weeks before the race, this website will be slightly updated to better inform our growing public.

Lastly, to those who use myspace, I ask that you add www.myspace.com/formyfather as a friend and from now till Father's Day you make it your number 1 Friend

More information coming soon..............

Brian Anderson Memorial 5K

Brian Anderson Memorial 5k race. My brother decided to enter this race in memory of a close high school friend. I decided to tag along and brought two of my friends , Trish and Steph. Daniel met up with his friend Chris and the five of us were the first people at the starting line. All five of us ended up meeting our goals.
These were our goals/times

Me: Top Ten and Under 20 minutes/ 10th, 2nd in age group and a time of 19:51
Daniel: Fastest 5k yet/ 21:26 26th place
Chris: Keep up with Dan / 21:35 27th place
Steph: close to 30 min/ 29:55 150th
Trish: beat 45 min / 43:12

For some of us, it was our first 5k and I don't think it could have gone any better.

3 Brothers at the Broad Street Run, Philly

So for our first longer run of 2007 my brothers and I decided to do the Broad Street Run in Philly on May 6. The day was absolutely beautiful with a wind on our backs the entire ten mile stretch. We got there a little late due to transit issues so we decided to take our time , get a good stretch in, and take some additional photos at the start. The race started at 830 and we crossed the start line at about 845. If you have never raced this course I highly recommend it. It is a little stressful getting to the start but it was a nice and easy run. The only problem starting 15 minutes late was having to run through thousands of people. This course is known for being the fastest ten mile course in the country and I spent most of my time running through slower runners or avoiding them by running on the sidewalk. Coming up to the finish line I actually said to myself, " Is that is", hoping for maybe a couple of additional miles. I finished with a chip time of 1:13:35 my brother Daniel with 1:25:44 and my brother Perry with a 1:28:51. We were so happy with our times and felt so proud of each other for finishing the race. Cant wait for the next race...... : )

marathon was a success Part 1

IMG_1593Copying.jpg

So this update was a little delayed but marathon day was a great success.

My brother and I spent the day before preparing for the run. We first went on our last run. A nice little run/walk to keep the legs limber. Then we went to the health and fitness expo to pick up our race packets. They feature a lot of products geared towards runners. We picked up some gear then decided to head home for a little pasta dinner.

I rested up a little bit then went to work on the race day shirts that you see in the picture above. I made 6 shirts with writing on the front and back. The front said Andrew Runs For and the back said ForMyFather.Org. I was up most of the night making the shirts and managed to get about 2.5 hours of sleep.

We got to the race start about 7:40 am and met up with my friends who were running the 8k. I also had several close friends there to help cheer us on. We briefly stretched and jogged over to the race start. I wished my brother goodluck and headed to the 3:20 gate time. I did a little more stretching among the other runners until finally the race began..............to be continued

Spreading the word

So today I ran 6 miles, the longest I have run since i started this site. It was a nice cool day and I went out around noon. I am very excited to be able to have some time to train, I just have to make sure that I dont over do it and injure my ankle again. At work I had the opportunity to tell my story again and ended up selling 8 charity bracelets and getting my second $20 dollar donation. I keep getting stories from people about how cancer has affected their life. One table had a child who had beat cancer. One table knew someone that had passed from it. Makes you think....maybe the little we do now will prevent someone else from losing a loved one......

The kindness of strangers

I work at several restaurants and over the weekend I had this very nice table of three. One guy was messing with me the entire time and I thought it was funny as hell. Near the end of their visit, they asked me some questions about myself and I started to tell them about Formyfather. They took down the web address and told me how great of an idea it was. After they left, I picked up the check book , looked inside, and got a little choked up. They left me a tip on their credit card and also had left $20 with a note saying For your father. I was very moved by this gesture. Thank you very much kind strangers, you will never know how much that meant to me.......

Feels good to be back

So today i managed to get out and run 3.6 miles after dealing with a cold for a few days. It felt good. There is definitely a high you get when it is just you and the pavement. I managed to cut a minute and a half off my time from last week running at about a 7:45/mile pace. Legs felt good today and my bad ankle did not bother me a bit.
I have several jobs and I talk about my runs at all of them. I love getting people into the sport and I love running with new people. It helps keep things fresh in my mind and helps pass a little something off to the people that start running.
At work last week , I was telling a gentleman about the fact that I have 6 jobs and that my sixth job is running my own charity. He told me that even though he did not know me , he was still proud of me. This , I guess, is why I started this journey. To pass my father's story along gives this such purpose.
I was in Philly on Friday and had the opportunity to see The Lion King. "He lives in you, he lives in me." These song lyrics made me think of my father and I got a little choked up. My father is still alive in me and that makes my work all the more important.
